The Grade 4 students read different poems, from Emily Dickenson, to 'poems' by their favourite musicians and their teachers too.
They discovered that poems often make comparisons between two completely different things. Ever heard of comparing a head of hair to a piano? Or a voice to melting ice cream? Or loneliness to an island?
They decided to try to write their own comparisons, or similes and metaphors, as they learnt, and here is what they came up with!
My Mom is beautiful, as beautiful as a star, spreading light everywhere.
Her personality is like the yin and yang. The perfect amount of good and evil.
My Mom is a rainbow exploding with colour and joy.
My Mom is the sun giving warmth to anyone in need.
My Mom is the best and I love her just the way she is.
My Grandma is soft, like a feather that brushes me softly when I am in tough times.
She is as caring as a cloud which drenches Mother Earth with a gentle shower of replenishing rain.
She is as warm-hearted as a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day.
She is sentimental like a time capsule: bursting open when she remembers the past.
And finally she is as free-spirited as a gazelle, prancing in the meadows.
She is my Grandma, my super hero!
My Father is a rock, strong and reliable.
He is a paintbrush spreading love and colours everywhere he goes.
My Father is an ant, hardworking for life to grow up from the ground.
My Father is as smart as a chimpanzee answering everything the world asks him.
My Father has black and white hair where you can see the wonders of the Nebula.
He has black and brown eyes like the mountains in the night sky.
He is as handsome as a tiger hiding its smartness in the grass.
He is as tall as a giraffe reaching heights nobody can reach.
He is as helpful as the internet by helping the world with his wonderful knowledge.
My Father is everything in the world you can expect.
My Mom is the red to the roses. Without her, they would be colourless and hopeless.
My Mom, she is the light to the sun. She guides me the right way.
My Mom is the water to the ocean. She is the reason we survive.
My Mom is my heart. She is why I am living!
LOVE YOU MOM!
