Erika Christakis is a former faculty member of the Yale Child Study Center and the author of the best-selling book The Importance of Being Little: What Young Children Really Need From Grownups. Christakis says that we’ve reached a perilous moment for very young kids: Increasingly we treat them as commodities and find ourselves “in danger of losing the child in childhood.”
During this years Onam celebrations we had a Pookkalam competition at school. PookKalam is the flower bed or flower arrangements done during Onam in Kerala.
The children were separated house and section wise and asked to come up with a theme for their Pookkalam. The children and support staff made some truly beautiful Pookkalam's!
Benzene is a clear, colourless, highly flammable and volatile liquid aromatic hydrocarbon with a gasoline-like odour. It is present in crude oil and is produced as a by-product when we refine crude oils. Benzene is a multipurpose compound, serving its use in a variety of different fields. It primarily acts as a raw material or ‘building blocks’ to produce other industrial chemicals such as phenols and toluene
University visits to BIS commenced from week one, beginning with an impressive UK University fair. Followed by three other groups of universities, this early exposure to the application process enabled students to gain some valuable insights into how they need to be prepared for the colleges and programs they are targeting.
Ask any BIS student which event they look forward to all year, and the resounding reply will be MADD Fest! Forget Coachella, MADD Fest is the most vibrant and fun celebration of music, art, dance and drama, at least in namma Bengaluru! BIS students get extensive exposure to the arts through the year, and MADD Fest attempts to encapsulate the spirit of that year in art all the way from PP to grade 12. Our theme this year was Summer of ’69, and the Visual and Performing Arts Department began the herculean task of curating students’ artwork and performances well in advance.
Did you know that BIS doesn’t use a traditional school bell? None of that harsh clanging for us, thank you. Instead, a beautifully composed piece of music plays over the speakers at the end of each class period, and that in itself should give you some idea of how musically inclined our school is. If you want a clearer picture, and as the kids say, want your “mind blown”, allow us to take you through this year’s musical performances at the MADDFEST.
The Grade 4 students read different poems, from Emily Dickenson, to 'poems' by their favourite musicians and their teachers too.
They discovered that poems often make comparisons between two completely different things. Ever heard of comparing a head of hair to a piano? Or a voice to melting ice cream? Or loneliness to an island?
I am from the black and white coffee mug in my kitchen,
From the superhero and villain drawings on it that inspire me.
I am from the bright orange splash of paint that lights up my room,
The scent of petrichor that wakes me up.
I am from the Amaryllis plant that blooms every year,
The old hollow tree that is my ‘Terabithia.’
We asked some of the children from Grade 1 to write about their experience at BIS. The children wrote some beautiful pieces.
Right from when babies are in the womb, often parents begin to play music to their child. When the child is born, music is used in forms of lullabies to sooth and rhymes and songs are there to entertain, engage and interact. Infants recognize the melody of a song long before they understand the words.
In my first attempt at writing a blog, it took me less than two minutes to decide what it’s going to be about. Even before you read the next sentence, I’m sure most of you are thinking “Learning Centre”; and you’re absolutely right. So read on, to know how the Learning Centre originated in BIS and how we are continuing to advance.
Here is an insight into what the BIS library has to offer for our children. Evidence suggests that children who read every day not only perform better in school, they also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. IGCSE Physical Education is not just an excellent base for the further studies in Physical Education, it can take you much further. Fascinated by the human mind? You can think about studying psychology. Interested in the human race? You can study sociology.
Times have changed from the previous generation to the present “new” generation. Due to an increase in urbanised living, pressure to perform academically and the lack of time children have these days, the rate of physical activity have decreased dramatically.
Wellness is defined as ‘the state of being in good health, especially as a pursued goal’. Why is wellness important? Wellness is important because if we want to function successfully in the world we need to be well. If we want to achieve goals, we need all areas of health to be well maintained because if any one is diminished, the others suffer too.
At BIS, the children's health and wellness is a great priority for us.
Books are beautiful and beneficial. They are so good for children in so many ways. It is really important as a parent to help your child develop a love for reading as early on as possible. With enthusiasm and confidence, children can enjoy a wonderful world of exploration and knowledge.
When you have a house full of devices and instant access to technology, it can be a really big challenge keeping your child away from them. Young children are so attracted to technology that they become skilled users of smartphones and tablets, often before they learn how to read and write. It’s also common these days for parents to use gadgets to occupy their children.
Most people in this world have someone they look up to and admire. It could be someone famous, a friend or a relative. You could admire so many people, there are no limits. However one of the most natural instincts of a human is to want to look up and admire your parents and for a parent, all you want to do is set a good example to your child so they see you as their role model.
Children are wonderfully inquisitive and curious. Right from when they start crawling, they work on exploring and seeing how everything in the world works. They observe and imitate and see how they can control themselves and their environment. This unrestricted exploration helps children form connections in their brain and helps them learn.
Children learn so much when they engage with their senses. Sensory play in particular is fun and it gives children a chance to be creative. In turn they will learn from their experiences. A lot of memories that adults have are formed from sensory experiences they had when they were a child.
